چکیده

Abstract Tree‐ring data have become widely used to model tree growth responses climate variability and gain insight about the potential effects of global warming on forests. We capitalized a rare opportunity develop growth–climate models using tree‐ring collected from all trees (>4 cm in diameter at breast height) within 50 × m plots established subalpine old‐growth forests western Canada. Our objective was determine how vary among size classes, species, sites. modeled relationships between times series annual basal area increment (ΔBA) yearly variables for individual trees; this approach obviated key statistical criticisms “traditional” analysis methods. Time were detrended priori size, age, legacy, competition effects. found that overall signal our time ΔBA weak; <6% interannual variance explained by variables. Nevertheless, there clear patterns climate–growth related species. Relationships five increased strength with class; large most sensitive fluctuations accounted ~71% effect across In stands, stable over 20th century but decreased 1940s small trees, indicating temporal reduction sensitivity coastal forests, Callitropsis nootkatensis significantly different direction magnitude than those co‐occurring Pinaceae The idiosyncratic stands could not be discriminated forest type (coastal vs. interior). individual‐tree modeling adds growing body research providing novel insights complexities challenges associated predicting future productivity data.

Tree allometry, leaf size and adult tree size in old-growth forests of western Oregon.

Relationships between tree height and crown dimensions and trunk diameter were determined for shade-tolerant species of old-growth forests of western Oregon. The study included both understory and overstory species, deciduous and evergreen angiosperms and evergreen conifers. A comparison of adult understory species with sapling overstory species of similar height showed greater crown width and ...

Reproductive and physiological responses to simulated climate warming for four subalpine species.

* The carbon costs of reproduction were examined in four subalpine herbaceous plant species for which number and size of flowers respond differently under a long-term infrared warming experiment. * Instantaneous measurements of gas exchange and an integrative model were used to calculate whole-plant carbon budgets and reproductive effort (RE). * Of the two species for which flowering was reduce...

A New Model for Size-Dependent Tree Growth in Forests.

Tree growth, especially diameter growth of tree stems, is an important issue for understanding the productivity and dynamics of forest stands. Metabolic scaling theory predicted that the 2/3 power of stem diameter at a certain time is a linear function of the 2/3 power of the initial diameter and that the diameter growth rate scales to the 1/3 power of the initial diameter. We tested these pred...

Responses of Herbaceous Species to Fire in Persian Oak (Quercus brantii) in Coppice Forests

Zagros forests are one of the important natural ecosystems in Iran with high plant diversity and variety of plant communities. In recent decades, fire events have frequently occurred in some of these ecosystems. The purpose of this research is to investigate the composition and diversity of herbaceous species after nine years of fire occurrence in the forests of Zagros in western Iran. For this...

Limits to upward movement of subalpine forests in a warming climate.

Rapid changes to the earth’s climate are well underway, already influencing biological systems across the globe. Among the key impacts are potential shifts in the geographic range of many species or ecosystems, often predicted to move either poleward or upward in response to warmer conditions (1, 2). In mountain biomes, as upper elevations become more climatically hospitable to tree establishme...
